THE HILLSIDE STORY
“On a hillside you will be delivered;
at the foot of the cross justified.”
- Beautiful, Scandalous Night
Some of the most significant events in Jesus’ life took place on a hillside.
On a hillside…
…Jesus multiplied fish and bread for hungry pilgrims. (Matthew 14:13-21 & 15:32-39, Mark 6:31-44 & 8:1-21, Luke 9:12-17, John 6:1-14)
…Jesus delivered the most influential sermon in history. (Matthew 5-7)
…Jesus would retreat to be alone with his Father. (Matthew 14:1-13, Mark 6:30-32, Luke 4:1-2, 5:16, 6:12-13 & 30-32, 22:39-44)
…Jesus was crucified. (Matthew 27:33, Mark 15:22, John 19:17)
…Jesus gave his final instructions to his followers. (Matthew 28:16-20)
All of the things that make hillsides so prominent in the life of Jesus are what we want Hillside Church to be: a place where people are provided for physically and spiritually, where they engage with the Word of God, where they can meet with God, where Jesus is lifted up, where sin is forgiven and people find healing, and where we are commissioned to follow Jesus faithfully.
All those purposes are a continuation of the rich history of the church that birthed Hillside, Christ Community Church. For nearly sixty years, Christ Community Church faithfully served Southeast Denver, making disciples of Jesus, proclaiming his Word, and providing for the community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the leadership of Christ Community felt it was necessary to make significant changes to our structure and ministries, changes significant enough that they warranted a rebirth of the church, a new expression for the world in which we live today, but with the same core purpose of worshipping Jesus Christ, making disciples of Jesus, and tangibly serving our neighbors with his love.
